Author’s note:
I’ve always loved Helldivers and the incredible universe built around it. My brain is constantly cooking up new enemies, weapons, story ideas—you may have seen that in a post I wrote a while back. Since I also really enjoy writing, I finally thought, “Why not combine the two?” And… well, here we are!
This series will follow John, an ordinary civilian navigating life on Super Earth and the growing pressure to enlist. It’ll take the form of diary entries from his perspective. I hope you enjoy the journey—and feedback is always welcome!
Day 1:
How should I start this…Dear Diary? Hello, world? Jeez- David, a colleague of mine, told me he started writing a diary and that it’s been pretty helpful and fun. Figured I would give it a shot.
So! Starting again.
Today’s a big day, I suppose. I turned 21, legal enough to drink freedom responsibly, apparently. It was a normal day: woke up, showered, had some breakfast and headed out to the workshop.
The air smelled like coolant and burnt metal—same as always. I fixed up two hover-truck motors that had been making a weird noise – according to the customer. It was a quick fix, but I didn’t rush. The radio was blasting as we all did our own thing—every second song was a remix of ‘For Super Earth,’ of course..
During lunchtime the guys brought out a couple of cupcakes with candles on them – they shouldn’t have, but I like sugar. We then ended up talking about how we’ve noticed that they’ve increased the amount of propaganda and recruiting announcements.
Damn, are things really that rough out there? I mean, how would we know, right? We only know what they tell us on the news or they announce new names being added to the Wall of Martyr.
Chris told us his cousin was “bravely deployed and will be forever honored on that wall”. We all said we would want to do something to help out too – being a mechanic is fun, I like my job – but we all kinda feel like it’s not enough?
I dunno…we changed the topic because we were all getting gloomy and they didn’t wanna sour my birthday. They are a sappy bunch, but if I were to ever enlist…I would want to do it with them. Buuut we always end up saying “next year we’ll definitely sign up together”.
Some things might never change, but at least I’m trying out this new diary writing thing, right? Maybe this’ll help me figure out what I actually want.
